"Drawing on skills to help pupils create comics" - Grimsby Telegraph

"Drawing on skills to help pupils create comics" - Grimsby Telegraph

WRITER and illustrator Kev Sutherland brought his artistic skills to Healing school by running a day of workshops for pupils, encouraging them to create their own comics.

His work has appeared in The Beano, Doctor Who Adventures, Match and Marvel comics.

He said: "I'm teaching the kids how to do comics and they are producing comics. I write and draw for publications from The Beano to Marvel comics.

"I show them how easy it is to do. I draw caricatures and can draw people in a minute.

"I have been writing and drawing for 25 years and teaching for the past ten years. I came here last year and I must have done something right, as I'm back again."

Kev is also the man behind the world-famous Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre. He presents comic art master classes in schools, libraries and art centres.

He is the creator and executive producer of The Sitcom Trials – a stage and television show devised, produced and presented by Kev.

It showcases new sitcoms and comedy items in a head-to-head format, the audience then vote for the one they like best and only see the ending of the winner.

Time is also spent working as a caricaturist, an author for television and radio, comic festival producer, comics historian and pundit, stand-up comedian and public speaker.

"Seeing what they come up with, the ideas that come from the heads of children is great. They can create the next Wonder woman, Spiderman, Superman – they will go away from here and create something amazing," added Kev.

Vice-principal Alison Smith said: "His workshops are always brilliant fun and were enjoyed by staff and pupils alike today – especially popular were the comic caricatures drawn. Pupils were also encouraged to release their creative talents by devising their own comic strips. Such extra curricular events were extremely valuable in enhancing the curriculum and the teaching of literacy."

Organiser and English teacher Lindsay Codd commented: "The Year 7 workshops in the school's new library have been very well received and it was rewarding to see even reluctant readers becoming highly engaged during the event."
