We've already seen Part 1: Podcasts (my previous years TV lists are listed below). Now we move on to...
Taking for granted, and not including, the staples (Only Connect, Uni Challenge, HIGNFY, House Of Games, Strictly) and some hits from the pit that get a rewatch (Veep and W1A are this year’s top two) or found for the first time (Big Boys), these are the shows we’ve watched that merit a mention from my year of, once more, watching way too much telly. Beginning with shows which we clearly watched but can't remember, or gave up on, or ones that used to be great but lost it.
The Hack - or Not The Post Office Scandal. Watched three episodes, didn’t care.
Brian and Maggie - Steve Coogan as Brian Walden, nah.
Out There - On ITV, had Martin Clunes as a farmer, filmed near us, watched it through to the end. Meh.
Zero Hour, or as we called it Agatha Crispy. One of the poorer Christie adaptations, we lasted an episode.
High Potential - looked promising, was lightweight, gave up
St Denis Medical - The folks behind Superstore, which I liked, made a follow up which is a carbon copy of Superstore. You can match every character in this with their original counterpart. Pitiful really.
True Detective 1 - First series of the show, that we missed at the time. The sexism has aged badly, lasted most of the first season but never made it to the end.
Shrinking - Psychiatrist comedy, on Apple TV which has little enough content for starters. Thought a lot of itself. Parts were good, but it became tiresome.
The Residence - there are better comedy murder shows with whopping budgets. Lasted one and a half eps.
Last One Laughing - It’s just Big Brother with comedians, but filmed in a day. Everyone got paid way more than this nail in the coffin of TV comedy merits.
Frauds - Suranne Jones and Jodie Whittaker as ex cons. A great premise, a shit script.
The Assassin - Keeley Hawes as an assassin on the run. Amazingly we watched this all the way through. It was nonsense.
A Cruel Love: Ruth Ellis - ITV drama suffered from lack of budget.
The Guest - this was actually good, a Welsh crime drama, again filmed near us. We saw it through and it very nearly stuck the landing. A shame I haven’t put this higher in my chart really. But there you go.
Paradise - Perfect example of one where I see the title and am forced to look it up. The President’s been shot and everyone’s in a sci fi bunker. I’ll never know how it ends, or care.
Department Q - Forgot this till someone mentioned it in the comments. Which is how this section gets its title. We lasted an episode and a half, a smug procedural that wishes it was Slow Horses.
Alien Earth - Oh god, this was the spin-off from (for the record) My Favourite Film. Adapted by the guy who made my Number 4 show from last year. I didn’t like it. I understand many did.
Which takes us to..
