Duck - here come more comics by kids

A week's worth of comics by kids in my Comic Art Masterclasses in Manchester, Sheffield, Northamptonshire and Macclesfield.

Manchester Grammar is a lovely independent school that's had me in a few times. And what a delight to have a Doctor Who themed title suggested by the kids. When's the last time that happened? I feel like it must be ten years. I'm probably wrong. To add to their general smashing-ness, I asked the kids who their favourite Doctor was (and bear in mind there's still only a small cohort who are Whovians, but there were more than most) and I got a David Tennant, a Tom Baker, and best of all a kid who said: "David Tennant - but the fourteenth, not the tenth."

Parkwood in Sheffield is where Paul Register, of Stan Lee Excelsior Awards, teaches. Or taught, as I learn he's giving up for a while to home-school his kids. So there's a school I won't be getting another return invite to, unless he really sells me to the new incumbent. It's been fun to go there a few times over the years. Even if they include the sort of kids who choose a "Diddy" title (P Diddy is currently in court) which I try and deflect from by drawing Ken (ever relevant to the kids) Dodd on the cover. Second time Doddy and his Diddy Men have made an appearance this year.

Maidwell Hall is my second posh school of the batch, and the second school I probably won't be getting a return invite from because, very sadly, this was the school's last week of existence. Having opened in 1936, and spending many years as a Prep School for Uppingham (about as far culturally as you can get from Parkwood in Sheffield, let us say), it's being wound up. Uppingham own the building and are now in possession of a 17th Century mansion with extensive grounds which they'll be able to flog for a quite considerable amount of money, I dare say.

Macc Pow in Macclesfield is a fabulous comic festival that celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend. I spent Saturday stood behind my table flogging my books, and did very well thankyou. Then on Sunday morning I did a one-off class which went very well as you can see. Above you can also see the flipchart that I like to decorate if I get the chance. In the main montage at the top of the page is a flipchart done at one of the schools in the Isle Of Wight earlier in the month, in case you wondered.

The celebrities these seven groups chose to appear in their demonstration strips, that thing I talk them through as I draw it on the flipchart and which tells them everything they need to know about how to tell a story in comics (that's what I think I'm doing, and who's to tell me otherwise) were: Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Drake, Kurt Cobain, Stephen Hawking, Lionel Messi, and Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

Findlay Macbeth Kickstarter reaches target in 20 minutes

By the thumbing of my pricks, Macbeth sold out by half past six!

I launched the Kickstarter campaign for the newly artworked edition of Findlay Macbeth at just after 6pm this evening, and within twenty minutes it had reached it target. Quite the result I'm sure you'll agree.

The reason, I think, we got there so fast was a) I set a ridiculously low target but don't let's dwell on that, and b) I've added the option for potential sponsors to buy pages of original artwork from the book.

At the simplest level, you can order a signed first edition of the new book for just £10, and see just how great the new grey-toned artwork looks. But better than that, you can get original pages of art from Findlay Macbeth itself for just £50 a page - and you get the signed book thrown in! What kind of crazy bargains are these? I know!

The Regular Art pages available at £50 each are: Pages 2 - 8, 10 - 13, 15 - 25, 27 - 41, 44 - 54, 56 - 58, 60, 61 (smudged), 62, 64 - 67, 69 - 72, 74 - 79, 81 - 86, 88 - 89, 91 - 93, 95 - 96, 99, 101 - 104, 106 - 109, 111 - 121, 124, 125

The Premium Art pages, going for just £150 each, are: Page 1 - Splash page (A3) 63 - Film Noir page 73 - Banquo zombie 94 - Murdered child 97 - Out damned spot 122 - Death of Macbeth (A3)

Join in the fun of the Kickstarter, adding to your bookshelves and your art collection in the process, here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kevfcomicartist/findlay-macbeth-graphic-novel-new-artwork-edition

Italian Brain Rot - comics by kids

Unbeknownst to me, I've been learning about Italian Brain Rot all this week. Here we see three examples of it from three different schools. And before you ask, no, I had no idea what it was, and having read about it I'm not sure I'm any the wiser.

Christchurch Lichfield was the first instance of this Brain Rot. It’s AI generated characters and nonsense that the kids watch on YouTube and Tiktok, with mock Italian lyrics and grotesque comic hybrids of animals and objects. With Crocodilo Bomberdini (or whatever) the kids have guessed the spelling and, inevitably, got it wrong.

Hunnyhill Newport and Lanesend Cowes. The kids, as soon as these titles are read out (in the knockout process by which we choose the favourite), are in uproar and find nothing else as funny. The images I then draw come straight off the internet. For the record, I far prefer The War of Spigetige which was the result of a kid trying to spell spaghetti.

Haylands Ryde and Gatten & Lake Shanklin. Our third bit of Italian Brain Rot, by which time I was getting used to it. The phenomenon only seems to have emerged earlier this year, which makes it a bit like pop hits were in our childhood.

The celebrities these six groups chose to appear in my demonstration strip were Michael Jackson (three times!), Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
