2024’s Most Popular Celebrity With Schoolkids is...

2024’s Most Popular Celebrity With Schoolkids is...

(Above: The final two comic covers of the year, made with year 7s at Heron Hall Academy, Enfield)

When I deliver my Comic Art Masterclasses in schools, as I have been doing with varying degrees of frequency for twenty years now, I do a demonstration strip as part of the workshop. I get the kids to suggest the names of four celebrities, the most famous people they can think of, and from those four names we choose the one that I’ll then draw in the strip. My notion has always been that it keeps them engaged and gives me the chance to ad lib and be sidesplittingly hilarious. That’s the idea.

Come the end of the year I’ve taken to totting up who they’ve suggested, and how often. In previous years their most popular suggestions have been:

2023 & 2022 - Dwayne The Rock Johnson (chosen 17 and 15 times)

2021 - Ariana Grande (13 times)

2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016  - Donald Trump (chosen 8, 16, 30, 42, and 25 times)

2015, 2014, 2013  - Simon Cowell (chosen 31, 27, and 25 times)

So who did they choose in 2024? Well, this year I did 89 days of school visits, and the various groups made 177 comics. Their celebrity choices were, in reverse (and alphabetical) order..

Thanks to anyone who's read these blogs of mine this year, I hope they give you some insight into the nonsense kids come up with, and the even greater nonsense I try teaching them. If anyone would like to book me to come and teach their kids, please get in touch. Just avoid World Book Day in March...and, wait a minute, this is the exact same last paragraph as last year. Why, it's as if I've realised no one ever reads these!
