Funky Marsh Mello - brand new comics by kids

The first comics of 2013 by the kids in my Comic Art Masterclasses, along with just a few caricatures of their hideous little faces. Enjoy...

These come from just three days in schools this month, in Wiltshire, Ealing and Newport. And the famous names they suggested for the "treads on a worm" demo were Will I Am, Gary Barlow, Jesse J, Adele, Lady Gaga and (most original of the month) Christopher Lee.

The prize for most earrings in any school goes to Monnow Primary in Newport. Some boys wear two earrings these days, you live and learn.

If you want to see more of this nonsense....

Keep Calm & OMG Panda! - comics by kids June 2012
Kid Afro Spaghetti - comics by kids June 2012
Phil Mitchell Meets Patrick - comics by kids May 2012
Fartimouse Owl - comics by kids May 2012
I ❤ Gingers - comics by kids May 2012

If anyone wants me to come and show their kids how to do what I've been doing for a living for the last two decades in my patent Comic Art Masterclasses, drop me a line, a comment, a Twitter, smoke signals, the usual methods. Click below to see more, including video and contact details.

Diary for January

Diary

With the deluge of Socks videos that I've been filling this blog with this month, I've not bothered to use it as a diary. So, for what it's worth, here are some of the things I've been up to in January that I might want to look back on and remember.

A Comic Art Masterclass cutting from last year that I've just stumbled upon. So far no press this year, for shame.

Caricaturing. Having ended 2012 with my last job being caricaturing at a Christmas party, I've started the year with a clutch of caricaturing gigs. A wedding in the Welsh Valleys, a hotel's Christmas party on the Strand, and a Bar Mitzvah in Enfield.

The Socks have had a quiet start to their gigging season, with just a heat of the Musical Comedy Awards (we got through) and a two-gigs-in-a-night double-up in snowy Derbyshire on Friday night. This has left me with time to write the new Socks In Space show. And have I? Of course not. Bits and bobs have come together, though I've found myself more inspired to write topical parody songs and sketches for them than to get on with the proper work.

I'll confess I like some of the videos we've produced this month - I watch the Captain Kirk and Eden Hazard songs for pleasure - and getting 41,000 viewers for the Tesco gags was fun (though not profitable, after I was removed from Google's adsense programme last year for clicking on my own ads, and this extended to ads being removed from my Youtube videos, which is annoying and unfair, and not something I can do anything about). But I can't see a topical song about a storm-in-a-teacup news story making its way into our live show ever.

Essentially I have been writing and producing the sort of material that would be great if I was contributing to a weekly topical comedy show, if for example The Socks were on The Now Show, but we must concentrate on stuff that I can still be performing a year from now. I'm on the case.

I've done two days in schools this month, it will be three by the month's end, and again the busy season lies ahead of me with Feb and March booked chocker with a mixture of Socks and schools. April's quiet by the way, if anyone wants me.

And The Sitcom Trials has me hoping to announce a big event, but waiting for someone else to confirm some details before I can say a thing. Hopefully next week the news will be out. In the meantime the Trials' first big event, Vince's play Checkpoint Dave, took place in Bristol and I went and missed it as a result of the small flurry of snow we experienced last week (I chickened out of driving from Clevedon to Bristol & back for fear of getting snowed in). Sorry Vince. Having seen a repeat of a fascinating documentary from 1963 on that year's Big Freeze (it lasted 3 months, and was the worst winter the country's ever seen) and having driven through snow this weekend in Derbyshire and Leicestershire, I feel all the more guilt for not braving the previous week's snow.

So,  a creative month has seen a couple of new Socks props appear, courtesy of Heather who has nailed two key costumes for the new show, and even seen me draw some cartoons and send them to Private Eye (swiftly rejected, of course, but maybe I'll do more).  And I've read some good stuff, Marvels Comics The Untold Story being the most informative and enjoyable read, Simon Baron Cohen's Zero Degrees Of Empathy being a bit of a technical handful that I'm chewing my way through dutifully, and the Pointless book living up to its name being the fluffiest nonsense I've read in a long while.

Parking Schadenfreude.

For a long time now the double yellow lines out the front of our house have been broken, They have served a purely decorative purpose, running as they do the complete length of our road, and routinely used as a car park. Not by us, you understand. I wouldn't dare. I've had two parking tickets in the last 20 years on that street, so I always find a legal space, even though that means half the time I'm parked a street away. However the rest of the neighbourhood have no such compunctions, with the road often having as many as 6 cars parked on the double yellows, overnight and all day.

One car in particular has been bugging us. It seems to belong to newcomers who have made the spot directly in front of our house their personal parking spot. Did I mention that all these cars straddle the pavement, the road being too narrow for them to do otherwise? So there's this one car, a grey Mazda, and it's out there day and night, blocking our pavement, making the recycling lorry's job nigh on impossible, and getting slightly on my nerves.

So imagine my joy when I came home the other day to see a parking ticket on its drivers window. Ha ha. They won't be blocking our pavement any more, I rejoiced as I stepped into the flat. To find, on the table, a Penalty Charge Notice for me! For parking for 3 minutes to nip into a shop in Camden at 10.30 on a Friday night. There is no justice.

Gosh, is that it? My diary for a month? I've, er, made some snowmen. Nope that's about it. I am starting to feel I could have done more in January. Okay, four days left, up and at em Atom Ant!

Horseburger cartoons that didn't make Private Eye

I can't remember when I last tried sending cartoons in to Private Eye. Oh wait, yes I can, it was last Friday, when I took some of the gags from the Socks' Tesco video and tried illustrating them. They were promptly rejected. So here they are, for posterity and your delectation.

Burns Night classic from the Socks

The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre celebrate Burns Night with a hit from the pit, dating back to before they wore their now familiar costumes and made their videos in widescreen. Enjoy...

Eden Hazard Song - Scottish Falsetto Socks

In the light of #ballboygate, in which Chelsea's Eden Hazard kicked a ballboy while getting knocked out of the cup by Swansea, The Socks have recorded a new song:

In case you can't make them out, the lyrics are below. See the best of The Socks' videos at tinyurl.com/Sockvids.

EDEN HAZARD

Pick up the ball because that's your job
But little Charlie Morgan had another idea
He made a big mistake and lay on top of it
So Chelsea's Eden Hazard gave the laddie a kick

On Twitter they say that's okay
If you're Eden Hazard
It's alright they say, if he's in your way
And you're Eden Hazard

What a role model you turn out to be
Kick a boy with the full support of your team
You can kick him cos he's just a schoolboy

Chelsea fans think that he should have got worse
Pat Nevin says he would have kicked him too
If you want a Chelsea fan to shut up
Remind them they just got beat & Swansea went through

So come on and say that its not OK
Even for Eden Hazard
To kick a ball boy cos he's holding up play
And you're Eden Hazard

But watch what you do cos the popular view
Is that Eden Hazard
Did the right thing to do, and they'd do it to you
If they were Eden Hazard

Godzilla Facts (and a theory) - Scottish Falsetto Socks

Brand new from the Socks, a look at the Top Ten Facts about a favourite monster.

We will confess this was made purely to test out a theory that people will watch videos with "Top 10" in the title more readily than they will watch our actual funny videos. Let us see if that is borne out.

Snow - new vid from the Socks

It's been snowing, and who can resist a good backdrop as an excuse to make video? So here are ten gags about snow.

And, yes, we were actually outside in the snow. Though, thanks to our new battery-operated camera-mounted spotlight (new this week thanks for asking), and the fact that the sky was dark and glowering by 4 o'clock in the afternoon, it looks like the Socks are in front of a slightly dark back projection (which you may have noticed in a couple of our other recent videos, thanks to our new video projector, with which we're still experimenting).

Snowmen

It's when I make my annual snowman that I'm reminded that I'm not the sculptor in the family.

It looks like Desperate Dan sticking his hand down his trousers. That said, two people have taken photos of it since I did it, so if it pops up on the local news, remember where you saw it first.

This is one of four little snowmen I did on a walk this morning. We don't get snow here often, so forgive me for having a little fun.

Blockbuster - new song from the Socks

Top 20 Tesco Horse Burger Gags - new from the Socks

Following the news that horse meat has been found in Tesco beef burgers, the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre present the Top 20 Tesco burger gags (5 of which they wrote themselves) as seen on Twitter.

Apart from the 5 which we made up (variations of which have since appeared) we can't be sure who first posted the rest, though one is most likely by Tony Cowards and another is by @brucel. This, by the way, is not what we normally do, but they were fun to read out.
UPDATE: Friday night (18/1/13), this video is now up to 7000 viewings, which is a lot more than any of our recent videos have had. What does this tell us?
UPDATER: Saturday morning 6.50am, this video now has 10,852 viewings. How do I turn that into bums on seats?
UPDATEST: Saturday night 9.50pm, this video's had 16,188 viewings. And did I mention we're not allowed to place adds on our YouTube any more? (by midnight this was up to 18,000)
UPDATESTER: Sunday 10 am, 23,920 views. No sign of slowing. Can't quite tell if the links to other videos are having any effect.
And so on. Sunday 5.30pm 25,945 views; 8.15pm 27,821; 11.45pm 29,080;
Monday 11am 34,276, 4pm 34,809 (slowing); Tuesday 7.30pm 37,783 (slower, but still adding 3000 views a day, which is 3000 views more than any of our other vids); Wednesday 22.30 39,924; Thursday 10am 40,018.

Much Later UPDATE: Feb 14th, we're at 48,556 viewings, which is still more viewings per week than any other video.

Burke & Hare - Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre

Online for the first time, a brand new studio version of Burke & Hare, from last year's Boo Lingerie show.

This version includes material that found itself dropped from the live show (though, sadly, the extended surgeon/Nicola Sturgeon routine has remained on the cutting room floor. Who could have guessed that was never actually funny?). The Michael Jackson song that topped off the live version of this routine is also missing, for copyright reasons (past experience suggests the soundtrack would find itself removed in some countries).

Now in it's fifth year, the The WeGotTickets Musical Comedy Awards has grown in stature to become an annual fixture in the comedy calendar and the place to see the UK's finest up and coming musical comedians alongside some of the best established acts of the genre on the circuit.

Over the years the MCA has provided a launch pad to superstar acts like Frisky and Mannish (2009 Finalists), Abandoman (2010 winners) and Jay Foreman (Best Newcomer 2009 and now touring with Dave Gorman) and created a thriving independent platform to celebrate the artform that is musical comedy. The competition has also played host to stars of the genre such as David O' Doherty, Mitch Benn, Bo Burnham, Pippa Evans, Isy Suttie and many more.

So the fifth MCA begins! The top 40 musical comedy acts have been selected from online entries to www.facebook.com/musicalcomedyawards and will now battle it out in the heats through to the Final at the Bloomsbury Theatre on April 5th at the wonderful Wilmo. Judges for this year's competition include Mark Boosey of British Comedy Guide, Tim Clark of Such Small Portions, Rupert Majendie of BBC Comedy, Lynne Parker of Funny Women, Kenny Cavey of Com Comedy and Jon Grant and Paul Weedon of Red 24 Management.

First caricatures of the year - there's thorough

Last night saw my first caricaturing event of 2013, drawing all the guests at a wedding in Wales, and I must admit I did a satisfyingly thorough job. On the bride's initiative, all the caricatures were displayed on a "clothes line" for everyone to enjoy as we went along...

The plan, then, was to feed all the drawings through the photocopier, as I do at the schools where I do my Comic Art Masterclass, giving the Happy Couple a montage of everyone's faces before the guests then took the originals home with them. Unfortunately the venue didn't have the sort of copier that does that (a fine venue, by the way, it used to be Laura Ashley's house, you'll recognise the fireplaces & staircases from their many photoshoots there) so instead I laid the caricatures out on the pool table in batches of 12 and photographed them. How many caricatures was that, you ask? About this many...

That, by the way, is the 90-odd pictures laid out in alphabetical orders so that the guests could find theirs at the end of the event. Did I mention I'm thorough as well as quick? If you'd like me to come and caricature at your event (it's not just weddings, my last gig of 2012 was a corporate Christmas party and next weekend I'm doing two Bar Mitzvahs). As we might say in my native Aberdeen, fa's a clivver loon?

If anyone wants me to come and show their kids how to do what I've been doing for a living for the last two decades in my patent Comic Art Masterclasses, drop me a line, a comment, a Twitter, smoke signals, the usual methods.
