Recorded live on Monday and Tuesday this week (soundtrack and images from one, images only from the other) here's the Australian Accents song from Roll Up. Click and enjoy. There's also a version without subtitles here.
Tuesday was the last time the song was performed in full. On Wednesday I edited the backing track down so I could remove the three least funny stanzas, and it's now much tighter.
This is something of a first for the Socks, being a song whose music and lyrics are entirely my own, rather than being a parody of an existing tune.
Here are the lyrics of the full length original.
AUSTRALIANS ACCENTS SONG
Australians can do accents,
but you can not do ours. F. Dm. Bb. C
We’re panglottal cunning
linguists
And it’s not within your
powers
Like Russell Crowe when he
was Noah, driving Noah’s ark C# / C /
C# / C
I don’t know what ancient
Aramaic sounds like, but he knocked it out the park. G / C
And what Russell Crowe was
doing, when he played Robin Hood. C# / C / C# / C
I’m pretty sure his
Nottingham accent… was good. G / C
Australians do great
accents, we’re the masters of the gen-ry. F. Dm. Bb. C
Liverpudlian to Birmingham
lit-er-ally enry
Nicole Kidman (me) can do
the patois of your choice. C# / C / C#
/ C
And I don’t think I’ve ever
heard Cate Blanchett do an Ozzy voice. G
/ C
Yes Australians can get
their tongues round anybody’s lingo C# / C / C# / C
Don’t talk to me about Meryl
Streep – a baby ate my dingo. G / C
Chris Hemsworth does posh
English when he’s being Thor the God
F. Dm. Bb. C
Though he goes a bit more
Ozzy when he’s being Thor the big fat slob.
F. Dm. Bb. C
Hugh Jackman does English
voiceovers, like Flushed Away you might have found.C# /C
And Steve Irwin was in
Stingray, or was that the other way round.
G / C
Guy Pearce from Memento can
do accents back to front. C# / C / C# / C
And Mel Gibson, well he is
just as versatile as the rest. G / C
D - modify
Some of your attempts at Oz
are cringeworthy to see. G / Bm / C / D
Especially
that bloke who did Crocodile Dundee – call that an accent. G / Bm / C / D
What’s that you say? Paul
Hogan’s accent genuine? Well fine. D# / D / D# / D
But it’s still not as authentic as mine – shut
your face. C / D Until August 25th, The Scottish Falsetto Socks ROLL UP! at the Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose 9.30pm, every night of the Edinburgh Fringe 2019. On sale now!
