Musical Tribute to Louise

Yesterday we heard the sad news (and I apologise to any of our friends who finds the news out by reading this) that our friend from art college Louise Delahay has died. The same age as us she has died tragically young, and we're not as yet entirely sure how (she was on holiday in Israel and, it appears, died two weeks ago, but the news has only just been confirmed to her family). Louise and I shared a student house in Exeter, just the two of us in the thinnest-walled building you've ever seen (intended as a summer house it was rented out as student accommodation) during the coldest winter Exeter had ever seen (or at least it felt that way), at the time that both of us started going out with the people who would become our eventual spouses. Louise was the president of the Student Union and I was her Social Secretary at that same time, and we were very close throughout our student years. Heather & I have kept in touch with Louise over the years, most recently meeting up with her at my gigs and Hev's exhibitions in Exeter, and so this news is both surprising and sad. Our sympathies go to her family and everyone who knew her.

My small way of paying tribute, and indulging myself, last night was to do some Youtoobling, just playing music videos that Lou brought to mind. Some of these were records she used to like, some just reflect my feelings as I played them. I'm sure she'd have appreciated the spirit of this while also loathing my lousy taste in music.

Youtoobling For Lou

Louise, Human League
Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Soft Cell
Life In Tokyo, Japan
My Eyes Adored, You Frankie Valli
Homely Girl, Chi-Lites
Will You, Hazel O'Connor

Pretty In Pink, Psychedelic Furs
Life Isn't Everything, Song For Lou, Elton John
First Of The Gang To Die, Morrisey
You don't know what you've got till it's gone. Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi
She's Gone, Hall & Oates
Fire & Rain, James Taylor
Over The Rainbow, Judy Garland
Only A Moment Ago, Partridge Family
Long Away, Queen
Goodbye To Love, Carpenters
And finally, cos I know Louise interviewed them in Exeter, The Clash Should I Stay Or Should I Go

Nominate The Socks in The Poke Awards

The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre would love you and be your best friends if you could find a moment in your busy schedule to do one of two things. Could you:

a) Nominate the Scottish Falsetto Socks in the Poke Awards?

The Pokes are the first and only awards celebrating British comic talent on the internet. Take a look at the categories and nominate your favourites - but hurry, you only have until Friday 18th November to submit who you want to win!

Their esteemed panel of judges will then select a shortlist of six in each category - which they'll announce on Wednesday 23rd November. Then the public will vote and the winners are announced before Christmas.

All submissions must have been created in the last 12 months i.e 4.11.10 - 3.11.11

So check out the Socks videos and maybe you fancy nominating something you've liked from the last 12 months of stuff.

We thank you in anticipation.

Revisiting the World's Biggest Comic

Because of a bit of interest in possibly exhibiting it, I've been looking once again at The World's Biggest Comic (as can be seen in the videos below)

This object was produced as a charity fundraising item for Comics 99, the UK's comic festival held in Bristol in April 1999. It stand three metres high and is two metres wide and comprises 16 giant pages of comic strip. On these strip pages is a story featuring every character from the history of comics, drawn by over 100 of the world's leading comic artists. All artwork was donated to the charitable appeal, and the original art auctioned at the festival raising money for ChildLine. The World's Biggest Comic itself was exhibited at the festival and has since been seen only once, at a comic event in Scotland in 2005.

The artists whose work is featured include Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Joe Quesada (Marvel supremo), Frank Quitely (Superman), Cam Kennedy (Batman), Chris Weston (Dan Dare), Al Davison (Spiral Cage), Bryan Talbot (Alice In Sunderland), Sean Phillips (Batman), Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), Alan Davis (Fantastic Four), Syd Jordan (Jeff Hawke), Mike Collins (Doctor Who), Gary Spencer Millidge (Strangehaven), and many more from all major publishers and titles representing the leading talents in the comics industry at the time. I was the editor and compiler of the comic and remain the owner of it.

The contents have never actually been published (and as it features so many copyright characters it will probably not see print in a hurry), so exhibiting the item itself is the only way for anyone to see it. It is of unique cultural significance, major popular interest, and a genuinely fascinating and beautiful object, as well as being a jolly good read!

I'm hoping we can get it shown somewhere good. If anyone is involved with galleries internationally, do please get in touch. It's a shame for this items to be living rolled up in a box in my studio all this time.

Comic Book Shop now open

Yes, I've redesigned my website slightly so you can find lots of my comic work in one place. Click it and see.

All the comics are there, from the new annual-sized Tales of Nambygate collection, through Captain Clevedon, Sinnerhound and Hot Rod Cow, via the Socks comic, to the Beano annuals containing some of my best strips. Sadly weekly comics like The Beano and Doctor Who Adventures are impossible to get from any reliable source. Roll on the day I can collect them all up into a big book. In the meantime, get ordering fast, Christmas is a-coming!
