Going Viral, Socks on Forbes

Mere hours after uploading the video, here we see, in an article about Doctor Who videos going viral, the Socks' latest Doctor Who video going viral, thanks to Ewan Spence and an article on the front page of Forbes...

I am, by the way, more than aware that Twitter & Facebook are already full of people saying how tired they are of Malcolm Tucker/ Doctor Who posts. Never has a joke got old so quickly (we might not even do it in tonight's show). I am also painfully aware that tomorrow, Tuesday, the Socks are doing a family-friendly appearance on the BBC's Pink Stage, so let's hope this Not Safe For Work video does as little harm to our career as The Thick Of It did to Peter Capaldi's family friendliness.

The Socks do Peter Capaldi as The Doctor

On the night that Peter Capaldi was announced as the new Doctor Who, the Socks had a go at doing him live...

Sellout!

Look at us, all over the Sold Out board at the Gilded Balloon. And with 104 in the audience that's officially our biggest Edinburgh Fringe audience ever (earlier rooms didn't have that capacity, though we sold out what they had a good few times). Let's hope it's not the last.

And what a show. After two nights (and a few previews) where I've been worried we had the right material but not necessarily in the right order, today I gave it all a thorough going over and finally made it work. Indeed the new Improv running gag worked so well we were running over tonight and had to lose lots towards the end of the show.

Tonight we lost the Ding Dong routine and the Rocket Man/ Gloria Gaynor song, but gained the new Improv material (which sets up some actual improv which then went really well). Whether the Improv works so well from now on, only time will tell. Like last week's Manchester preview, a sellout audience who were responsive to every idea, turned the show into a total winner. (There were, of course, no reviewers or Comedy Awards judges in tonight's crowd, so we can only hope such a good show turns into great word of mouth).

Today had three good stints of flyering, which seem to have paid off, and the weekend's shows look like requiring more of the same. The weather's lovely, so you never know I might come away with a tan to boot.

Me & the Socks on Sky News on the Royal Mile

Well look at me all over Sky News this morning...

A valiant attempt by me to squeeze the flyer for the show into shot, but frankly I'm not holding my breath for the bums on seats it'll bring in. When you watch the clip (which I can't link to directly, but you'll find it), you might find my 2 seconds of fame less than overwhelming. But fun to be in the package, the Fringe has begun.

Where are we? Where are we? (We're back in E.D.I.N.Braw)

The Socks are back in town, and here's the song to prove it.

Who would have thought when the Socks recorded that video way back in 2009 that the gags about the trams ruining the look of Princes Street and not being finished yet would still be topical? And, yes, I remember tweeting that exact same observation last year too. The laying of tramlines in Edinburgh has now lasted longer than the Second World War, and they're not finished yet.

Last night's first night show was a good one, though I fear we can look forward to our 6th year without an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination (yes there was a judge in, no it wasn't perfect), and we've started as we mean to go on. Apart from the bits that I'm still rewriting (eg Alien, which was only on its second performance and is still a bit of a jumble of ad-libs which haven't appeared in the same order twice). I can confirm the Comicbook Song was word perfect on its third ever performance. This may never happen again. Stay tuned.
