Puppetry of the Sock revisited

The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre play Swindon Arts Centre on Weds May 1st (tickets here). And by spooky coincidence, on the same night in the same town, Puppetry Of The Penis are also playing. What on earth could happen if audiences get the two mixed up?

This is the back of the Socks' first ever Edinburgh flyer from 2007, when they were playing in the smallest room at The Gilded Balloon and Puppetry of the Penis were playing the largest. Let us see who's the biggest puller in Swindon next Wednesday, shall we?

The Scottish Falseto Sock Puppet Theatre Chunky Woollen Nits is at Swindon Arts Centre, Weds May 1st, 7pm. They'll be presenting their brand new Socks In Space show plus the best of their favourite stuff.

At last, they're here (well, they're at the printers), the new flyers. Here's the back:

And here's the slightly less surprising front of the flyer, resembling as it does the poster which you might have already seen. Ah, there's a new quote, and one in a different place. Find the poster and play compare and contrast.

Sincerest form of flattery and all that...

I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that, but check this out..

To the left are two images from an App called Sock Puppets which you use on the iPad to make animations lip-synched to your own voice, like so. The designers have very kindly sent me a copy. But, blimey, doesn't the template for the face look uncannily like it's been traced from the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre's 2007 Edinburgh poster and promo photo (right)? Right down to the reflections in the eyeballs, the grooves in the socks (they were a pair of my Dad's), and even the characteristic shape of my hand. I'm not entirely sure what I should, or can, do about it.

Banned by Frankie Boyle, and other diary round-ups

Being a round-up of nonsense I may have noted on Twitter and Facebook but forgotten to put in this more 'permanent' form. Beginning with me being banned from following Frankie Boyle on Twitter...

No, me neither. I was alerted to this when The Guardian wrote a piece about Frankie's Twitter commentary on the Thatcher funeral, which I totally missed as a result (and two days later it really didn't have the same impact). Why would a broadcaster ban individuals from following their programme? We may never know. But, after Tramadol Nights, that's a second strike for Frankie. One more and he's out of my good books.

Private Eyes on eBay

Ever wanted to see how little interest you can attract to eBay? Try putting half a dozen Private Eyes from 1967-1972 up there. Not a sausage.

Random tweets:

All this fuss over the Thatcher funeral. Ted Heath just asked to be buried at sea, inserted into a small buoy.

First easily misconstrued headline of the day: Rebel Wilson killed at the MTV Movie Awards

Ooh, been forgetting to do my little triumphant song every time we book a tour date. So, catching up, here goes... Whoo -

Whoo hoo Leeds! Whoo hoo Horsham! Whoo hoo Birmingham! Whoo hoo Belfast! Whoo hoo Barton! New Socks tour dates

The Socks' most watched video this week, oddly, is The Eden Hazard Song (not the Mrs Thatcher stuff. Fair enough)

If only he hadn't written upon it "Return to Sender" : Accused ricin-mailer is an Elvis-impersonater

Not sure whether to do my celebratory Tour-Date-Confirmed dance for an "I'll ping some date options back to you". Think I'll hold fire.

Ho ho, Facebook satire

Today's Most-Easily-Misconstrued Tweet Of The Day: Had fab blowy pm in Nottingham

Not upgraded the carpet since 1993 I see. : 1993 vs 2013

Keep forgetting to do our little celebration dance when we confirm a Socks tour date booking. So, whoo-hoo Farnham!

Doing a celebration dance for confirming another Socks tour date. Whoo-hoo Chorley! Autumn tour now biggest yet. Whoo-and very much-hoo.

The Socks 2nd Comic - Sneak preview

The world has been waiting for the second edition of the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet's own comic since 2008, could that wait now be over?

Well probably not, as the 80 page comic is still only half drawn. (To be precise it's all pencilled and lettered, and a third inked, with 4 pages of it coloured). So it might not be on sale in time for the Socks summer gigs, but maybe by Autumn? Or Christmas? It really is quite a handful doing everything you know. Enjoy this taster, their classic James Bond routine adapted into comic strip.

Socks tour map, look at those gaps

To help me book the Scottish Falsetto Socks ongoing tour, I've made a Google map of where they have played and are booked to play their full theatre show in 2012 and 2013:

My there are some gaps in the country that need filling aren't there? There must be someone between Edinburgh and Harrogate waiting to see us, and East Anglia seems to have been woefully neglected recently. As for Ireland, we're looking at virgin territory. Righty ho, the rest of the country, we're coming to get you!

Socks In Brighton - a grand tradition (and new video)

When the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre bring Socks In Space to Komedia in Brighton on May 9th & 10th (book now) they're continuing a grand tradition of video-making with this, their new trailer.

Eagle-eyed among you might notice it's a slight re-edit of last year's promo film, waste not want not. But the Socks and Brighton have spawned more new videos together than any other location outside of Edinburgh. Here, for your delight and delectation, are some of the best, two on location on the streets of Brighton, the rest live at Komedia.

See, and download, Brighton's own 2013 Socks In Space poster here

The Socks in Space shows at Komedia Brighton on May 9 & 10 are cheaper if you can book in person http://tinyurl.com/SoxBrig You save £1 off an online booking and £1.50 off a phone booking. Which means if one of you books, on foot, for a group of six, you get the equivalent of ONE FREE TICKET compared to a phone booking. How's that? Bargain. So book now, you know it makes sense.

Socks in Inverness - and beyond

Check us out all over the front of the Happyness Festival in Inverness

Yes, if you're a Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre fan, and you missed your last opportunity to see the Socks in Inverness at Eden Court Theatre in April 2011, you are about to overdose. Cos in the next month and a bit you will get not one, not two, not three, not four, not five but... yes, actually, five chances to see us in Inverness.

The first, biggest and best opportunity is to see us at Eden Court on Sunday April 28th as part of The Gilded Balloon Comedy Circuit, where we'll be doing a 35 minute headline slot. Book now. For fans of Socks in their full sweary-worded glory, this is the show to see.

However if you want to see how the Socks fare performing in the open air, a bit like we did in Adelaide, but in the slightly less predictable climate of Inverness, then turn up at Falcon Square at 1pm on Sat 25th May and you can see the family-friendly version of our show. Or if you have a fondness for canvas, then you can see us doing the family-friendly version again in the grounds of Eden Court itself at 3pm on Sat 25th and 3pm Sun 26th May. Or, if it's been blowing a gale all weekend and you can only bear watching us in the warm, we'll be performing at 9.15pm on Sunday 26th as part of the all-star comedy line-up at Madhatters at Hootenannys. All part of the Happyness Festival, you lucky lucky people.

Don't forget to tell all your Highland friends not to miss this comedy cavalcade, which also features acts like Russel Kane, Janey Godley, Arthur Smith and the like. Why it could be worth planning a holiday specially. They also have a Loch Ness Monster just a couple of miles away, but ask yourself, can that possibly compare?

Socks Mrs T song on the front of Chortle

The Socks Mrs Thatcher song from yesterday has been honoured with the video slot on the front page of Chortle. Yes, I still call it a front page or front cover cos I'm old school. Enjoy it while it's there. Steve, Bennett the editor, was running a video contest with a cash prize which we entered but didn't win for a couple of months. He's now given that up as only a few people were entering it, probably me & four others, and the ad revenue came to pennies. So videos are free again, but it's still flattering to be the one that's chosen.

At time of writing, the video has attracting 700 viewings, making it our fastest-growing video since The Pope Resigns. For the record, here's the Top Ten viewing figures from the last few months:

Top 20 Horse Meat Gags - 53,065
Pope Resigns - 3469
Socks Gangnam Style - 2402
Eden Hazard Song - 1310
Where Am I Now? - Bowie song - 1017
Richard III - 816
Top 10 Snow Gags - 762
Where's Captain Kirk - 756
Song For Mrs Thatcher - 702 (after half a day)*
Fireball XL5 - 630

* Song For Mrs T is up to 960 viewings 3.45pm the same day.
Thurs 8am, Mrs T video has had 2246 viewings.

Thatcher - from an arboretum of thoughts

Oh Time Out, what were you thinking?

I think we are conflicted between her as a human being, with a son & daughter, and her as an avatar of extreme right wing doctrine. Under her, Section 28 happened, she made the Miners Strike happen, and her economics led to the division of society we could see coming and that has come to pass. In the working class societies of Scotland, Wales and the North of England she is the reason there are no Conservative MPs. I know many people in the South don't comprehend this, but they are in a minority, politically and mentally, in this country (until or unless Scotland lets them go). The term Tory Scum might mean little in Swindon, but it gained its greatest foothold in the 1980s under, and because, of the beliefs and the actions of Mrs Thatcher. It is sad that an 87 year old has dies, against all the obvious odds. But expect us to celebrate her memory and you will find you are asking the wrong people.

After Billy Bragg post:

Hear hear. Mrs Thatcher, for the last 20 years, has just been a person whose work was done. For the previous 20 years she was part of a process, a machine, a thing that can happen if the right people don't do the right thing at the right time. So, bless the old lady, love her family. And let's learn the lessons of the past.

Song For Mrs Thatcher - new from the Socks

In response to the death, today, of Mrs Thatcher, the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre have recorded a musical number.

SONG FOR MRS THATCHER

Goodbye Mrs T
Though we never knew you at all
You had the grace to experiment on us
With that tax they called the poll

You said if you take the bus, you're a failure
And you said there's no such thing
As society, there's only individuals

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a Tory Prime Minister
Doing things that most people disagreed with
Yet we couldn't get rid of you

And we would have liked to have killed you
But we didn't, as you know
So let's fire things at you as you sail away
Like you did with the Belgrano

New animated ad for Bedford Fringe

Bedford Fringe asked for an animated gif promoting our show in July, so they got it.

If there's interest and time enough, I could do one of these for every venue we're playing at. So, who wants one? (I guess if anyone at home wanted their own personalised Socks In Space animation, they could have one for a tiny fee. Yours for a fiver, go on).

April in the Socks calendar - The Matrix

This is how we celebrate April on the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre's 2013 calendar, with the Socks take on The Matrix (click to enlarge)...

If you want to enjoy this in full printed splendour (and it is worth while trying to read all the small print in the background) you can still buy the calendar with its 12 unique brand new specially drawn cartoons by Kev F formerly of The Beano. It's good for another 9 months and is a collector's item joy to treasure. Click on the image to see more of the calendar and the link to the shop, or if you can't wait, buy it here.

What's that you say? You'd like a song and a video specially produced by the Socks telling you all about it? Go on then...

Exeter v Torrington - but who's best?

The Scottish Falsetto Socks have two shows coming up in Devon, just 40 miles apart, at Plough Arts in Torrington on April 12th, then the Barnfield Theatre Exeter on April 13th. But which venue's going to attract the biggest and best audience? The gloves are off.

If you're nearer North Devon, book your tickets for Friday in Torrington by ringing 01805 645645, and if you're in South Devon get onto the Barnfield now by their online link or by ringing 01392 270891. Which venue will have the bigger and better crowd, stay tuned to find out. (Or come to both shows, why don't you? That way you'll be the first to know, and be part of the answer.*)

* We don't expect anyone to do this by the way.
