Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets Do Shakespeare, Theatre Review. Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Fringe 2016.
Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10
A star of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a riot of respectful impertinence and one of the ultimate must see’s of the entire month of August, never mind that rare glimpse of sunshine that has long gone past or in Olympic year the sight of carnivals in exotic cities, the real draw is in watching Kev F. Sutherland’s brilliant creation, Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets Do Shakespeare.
If you can keep your head whilst two argumentative socks bring the immortal Bard to task, then yours is a world of grey skies and down at heel laughing prospects, however if you can laugh out loud, if you can join in the maelstrom of irreverence whilst maintaining the highest of truth for the joy of William Shakespeare, then yours a Universe in which comedy brings out the very best in you and those with tears of laughter that sit alongside you.
It is the start of a beautiful relationship that is forged by the absurdity of the actions of two sock puppets which keeps bringing audiences back year after year and inside the Gilded Balloon, no matter how verging on the exhausted you are from a day of making the most of the Edinburgh Fringe, there is always just that room for one more thing and as the socks lovingly rip open the seams of Richard III, Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, beautiful anarchy reigns supreme.
Crowds in Edinburgh may be able to experience four seasons in one day, but to hear the sheer thought of comic talent straining at the leash to take on every conceivable way to lovingly shock and bring the image of Anthony Sher’s portrayal of the hunched back king and the real reason why hose is popular to the mind, never mind the four seasons, this is the perfect antidote to the wind that blasts the sturdy resolve, the cloud burst on the over-heated and self important and that rare glimpse of snow, tantalising and life affirming, in a desert.
If there is only one day in which to get the very best out of the Edinburgh Fringe then as the clocks wind their way towards midnight, as the day begins to diminish, take in the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets Do Shakespeare, for doublet and ruff, for every sonnet and unfunny line that has not translated well over time, Kev F. Sutherland will give you the perfect ending and make you glad to be alive.
