Short com interview - Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre 10.30pm Aug 3 - 29, Gilded Balloon
Edinburgh, the Fringe, why bother?
All these people. The streets are full of them. There must be, like, dozens of them, and let's face it, not everyone wants to watch the Olympics.. So we figured let's put a show on, see if we can drag them away from the telly.
What have been the nuggets of inspiration behind your show this year?
We discovered this writer called Shakespeare who, I dunno, some people have heard of. But, and you won't believe it, it's exactly 400 years since he died. So we're doing a show all about him. Sorry, we had the idea first, you can jump off our originality bandwagon Right Now!
Stand-out Fringe moment to date?
We've been bringing shows up to Edinburgh since 2007, so our memories are riddled with stand-out moments. Probably the time Benedict Cumberbatch tried to walk off with us. (We're sock puppets, we were in a bag, he thought it was his friend's bag. Hilarity ensued.)
When you wished a hole had opened up in the ground and swallowed you up?
Because of the bright lights, we sometimes can't see the audience, so we judge what they're like by the sounds that they make, and respond accordingly. Oh, you can fill in the rest of the anecdote. It ends "...all of them in wheelchairs".
Your unsung heroes in the industry at current?
Last night we discovered the magic that is Peter and Bambi Heaven. They will remain our absolute favourites, at least until we see something else this afternoon.
Three shows you must see this Fringe?
Peter & Bambi Heaven* (*NB we may update this suggestion every few hours), anything in the Art Festival programme especially at Summerhall and up Calton Hill, and a show that no-one else has seen which you can then tweet the hell out of and make someone's day.
The one person you’d love to see your show and why?
We'd love Shakespeare to come and see us doing his stuff, if only so he could learn about how to make the funny bits work.
The reason why one should come and see your show?
If only one comes to see our show, that's seven thousand quid up the swannee-of-Avon. The reason 2000 people should come see our show is cos it's educational and, we're told, funny.
The one thing in Edinburgh you must do?
Play the Edinburgh equivalent of Pokemon Go - collect flyers. Gotta catch em all.
Ah sorry, you’re dead. But least you can have that dinner party you’ve always wanted. Who are you inviting?
Shakespeare, obviously, and the Bible, and Kirsty Young... that's Desert Island Discs we're doing isn't it. Whatever, we'll have those three, two of them probably don't eat much.
